A Visual Reference

Pages from Shahnameh – The Book of KingsĀ – written by Ferdowsi in Farsi in the 8th c. This manuscript was written in nasta’liq during the Timourid Rule in the 15th c.

I am using this as a visual inspiration. The epic poem The Book of Kings, as the name indicates, is all about kings, myths and legends and, with a few exceptions, all the characters are men. But Grounding is about a real woman in real life. The scale, the subject matter and the voice all dislodge the associations we make immediately with this style of writing, and create a sense of alienation where critical response can grow.
